Who’s the Problem on ‘Wedding Island?’
In last week’s review of Wedding Island, I called Sandy Malone, head of Weddings in Vieques, not a very nice person. This post will attempt to be fairer to her.
Wedding Island subscribes to the philosophy that anything that can go wrong will. Sandy always has to deal with other people’s major mistakes, such as a restaurant called Lazy Jack’s booking two wedding parties on the same night. She claims that the owner decided to book the another group over her’s because they were paying more money. The owner made it sound like it was a genuine mistake and someone misplaced their reservation, but Sandy’s attitude made him not want to make the situation right. Instead, he told her to get lost and that he doesn’t need her business. On the show, scenarios like this happen all the time. This time it worked out because anther restaurant down the street was able to accommodate the 20 guests, but Sandy stressed everyone out and made a scene by arguing with Lazy Jack’s owner in the middle of the street. Do people on Vieques not respect her because she doesn’t respect them?
Vieques tends to attract very demanding brides, many of whom do not realize it is not New York or Los Angeles. You can’t get anything you want at any time. One bride decided the day before the wedding she would like to arrive by helicopter as a surprise for her adventurous husband. Sandy just so happened to have a friend with a police helicopter, who was willing to fly the bride across the island. Even though the bride got everything she wanted, the request wasn’t very reasonable, especially at the last minute.
The other bride featured in the episode Everyone Hates Double Wedding Weekends had a very limited budget. It was so limited; she unsuccessfully tried to have one of her bridesmaids dj. Sandy had to call her friend, DJ Paul, at the last minute, which only made matters worse. The bridesmaid still wanted to be responsible for the music, so she kept bothering DJ Paul, who was her replacement. He said the bridesmaid was pulling wires out and messing everything up. Sandy pulled the bridesmaid aside. The bridesmaid denied it and said she just wanted to make sure he had the correct music. Toward the end of the conversation, Sandy accused the bridesmaid of making a scene and ruining her sisters wedding, which resulted in the bridesmaid crying and the bride having to serve as an intermediary. While it is unclear that the bridesmaid was doing something she wasn’t supposed to, it is clear that Sandy was responsible for the scene caused at the wedding.
