‘Double Divas’ Look For the Perfect Fit
As a woman, I have mixed feelings about Lifetime’s Double Divas. On one hand, I think it’s great that the women at LiviRae Lingerie, which is in Kennesaw, Georgia, help women of all sizes find the perfect bra and panties. On the other, it’s awkward watching women on television going through the intimate experience of trying on intimate apparel, especially when you realize that the show will appeal to the demographic that makes do with the Victoria Secret catalog because their older brother refuses to buy them Playboy.
Setting all of that aside, Double Divas is definitely worth a look. The show is in the same vein as TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress and I Found the Gown. Because the show deals with lingerie, it will not be for everyone, but it doesn’t have to be. LiviRae owners Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Richards understand that most women want bras that are functional and pretty. They get that pretty does not equal sexy and that not everyone is comfortable showing off their breasts.
The three stars of the show are Molly Hopkins, Cynthia Richards and their apprentice Loren Schaffer. All three women come off as variations on the Southern Belle. Loren seems to know the lingerie business, but is oblivious to the fact that, unless they know her, no one takes her seriously because she dresses too slutty, even for a lingerie store. Molly is sassy and knows she doesn’t have to be a size two in order to be beautiful. Cynthia is more reserved and is not always comfortable around unusual clients, such as a particularly large woman who required custom underwear several sizes larger than the biggest the store carries or women at a nudist resort who are completely naked during the fitting. To be fair, most people probably would have had the same reaction in both circumstances. It just stands out because Molly has no problem seeing people others would brand as “freaks” as real people with real needs.
Each episode has two many “plotlines:” one involving fittings in the store and one that takes Molly, Cynthia, and Loren outside of the store. For example, one episode had a customer, who had a double mastectomy in her early 20s and opted out of reconstruction surgery, needing a pretty bra that would hold her prostheses for her wedding day. Since their mastectomy bra selection didn’t have what the customer was looking for, Molly and Cynthia found a pretty nursing bra with pockets that could hold the prostheses. Another episode had its own in-store story, but had Cynthia making a toilet paper dress for a competition. Cynthia ended up not entering the competition. Instead, she took the dress to a local bridal show and had Molly model it because she was curious if it could pass for a real dress.
Hopefully, Double Divas gets renewed for a third season because not enough people know about this show. Its second season finale airs next Tuesday at 10pm. Until then, you can catch up on what you missed on Lifetime’s website.
